Protecting Communities through Rabies Vaccines

Every year, rabies claims the lives of an estimated 59,000 people worldwide. The vast majority of these deaths occur in Africa and Asia, and more than 99% are the result of dog bites. Yet rabies is not only one of the deadliest zoonotic diseases, but also one of the most preventable.
Every year, rabies claims the lives of an estimated 59,000 people worldwide. The vast majority of these deaths occur in Africa and Asia, and more than 99% are the result of dog bites. Yet rabies is not only one of the deadliest zoonotic diseases, but also one of the most preventable.

Why Rabies Matters

Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the brain and nervous system. Once symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal. For families in affected regions, this results in several lives cut tragically short, with children left without parents and communities living in fear.

Beyond the human cost, rabies also fuels animal suffering. With 99% of rabies cases resulting from dog bites, millions of dogs are threatened with culling due to the fear and misinformation that surrounds the disease. Several innocent lives are lost, even though a humane solution exists.

The Proven Solution

The World Health Organisation recognises vaccination as the single most effective and humane way to control rabies. Unlike mass removal or culling, vaccination programmes safeguard dog populations, improve community safety, and offer hope for a rabies free future.

By vaccinating 70% of dogs in a community, rabies transmission can be stopped at its source, protecting both people and dogs.

Our Role in Rabies Elimination

At Wild at Heart Foundation, we work with trusted local partners across the world to carry out vaccination drives as part of our Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return (CNVR) programmes. These not only reduce dog populations humanely but also create healthier, safer communities.

In places like India, Ukraine, and Mexico, our vaccination efforts are saving lives every day. A single vaccine can mean the difference between life and death for a dog and protect countless humans from this deadly disease.

Building a Safer Future Together

Rabies is a global problem, but together we can be part of the solution. Every vaccine delivered to a dog is a step towards saving lives and creating a safer, more compassionate world.

With your support, we can help protect families, stop unnecessary dog culls, and give free roaming dogs the chance to live in peace.

Donate today to support our vital work and join us in creating a rabies free future.
