Free-roaming dogs around the world endure immense suffering, facing malnutrition, disease, and mistreatment. With a focus on sterilisation, welfare, and education, we work to improve their lives and encourage compassionate care of all dogs.
Free-roaming dogs fall into three categories:
With sustainable solutions and community-led initiatives, we are not just changing lives; we are building a more compassionate world where every dog is valued and protected.
— Gillian Wood, Mexico Project Partner
Sterilisation
Sterilisation remains the single most effective and compassionate method of controlling the free-roaming dog population. Without intervention, one female dog and her litter of puppies could result in 67,000 more homeless dogs living on the streets in just six years. We are proud to make sterilisation an integral part of our mission and so far over 32,700 dogs have been sterilised thanks to our work with global partners.
Studies prove that over time and with continued sterilisation and vaccination efforts, regional dog populations significantly decrease, and the welfare of the remaining dogs, whether they are stray or partially owned, is greatly improved.
Welfare
Wild at Heart Foundation improves the welfare of free-roaming dogs worldwide by funding vital initiatives through our project partners, including vaccinations, veterinary care, food, and shelter, to combat malnutrition, disease, and injury. By supporting these welfare programmes, we provide life-saving treatment, reduce suffering, and give free-roaming dogs a better chance at survival.
In addition to international efforts, we extend our welfare work to the UK, supporting food banks that help pet owners struggling to care for their animals. Economic hardship can often lead to pet abandonment, but by providing access to pet food and supplies, we help keep dogs in loving homes and prevent them from being abandoned.
Education
As a key part of our mission, we aim to deliver educational programmes that promote animal welfare, empathy, and respect for dogs. Through community engagement, we have collaborated with schools and local non-profits to raise awareness and support compassionate, long-term solutions for free-roaming dogs.
The Foundation will offer a KS2 Be Kind education programme, available for UK schools to sign up to throughout the year. These downloadable worksheets are designed to teach children compassion and kindness towards animals while promoting our message of responsible pet care. More information on our education programme coming soon.
