Romania

Background

Romania has the largest stray dog population in Europe, with an estimated 600,000 dogs living on the streets. Many face inhumane treatment, and are captured and placed in overcrowded, unsanitary public pounds where euthanasia is common. With harsh winters, limited food sources, and widespread mistreatment, survival is a constant struggle for these vulnerable animals.

Our Partnership

Wild at Heart Foundation has supported multiple organisations in Romania since 2015, inspired by our founder Nikki’s adoption of a Romanian puppy the year before. We currently work with two passionate dog advocates, Anca, a vet who runs a small shelter from her home, and Alexandra, founder of the family-run shelter, Sava’s Safe Haven, located near the Ukrainian border.

Since its establishment in 2012, Sava’s Safe Haven has rescued and rehabilitated more than 5,000 animals and currently provides ongoing care for around 250 dogs and cats at any given time, offering them safety, medical care, and a chance at a brighter future.

The Difference Made So Far

Providing consistent monthly funding to support our Romanian project partners, helping them feed, care for, and sterilise both dogs in their direct care and those living on the streets, has long been a priority for Wild at Heart Foundation.

When the war in Ukraine began, Sava’s Safe Haven became a vital refuge for displaced animals. With our support, the team was able to provide urgent isolation shelter, medical treatment, and food to dogs arriving from conflict zones, offering safety and hope during turmoil.

Recognising the lack of veterinary access in rural areas, we also supported the establishment of a mobile vet clinic for Sava’s Safe Haven, made possible through Waggel’s generous sponsorship. This mobile service continues to reach communities and dogs that would otherwise be without vital veterinary support, ensuring more dogs have the chance to live healthy, safe, and happy lives.

Building the Future with Your Support

Our priorities in Romania include expanding community sterilisation clinics and supporting educational campaigns in local schools, fostering responsible pet ownership and compassion for animals.

By assisting with infrastructure to enable rural outreach and emergency response, we could also help ensure that every dog, whether owned or not, receives the care, protection, and hope they so urgently deserve.
