Background
India has the world’s largest population of free-roaming dogs, with an estimated 52.5 million living on the streets. The lack of widespread sterilisation programmes has led to uncontrolled breeding, while the ongoing threat of rabies creates fear and hostility toward strays. Inhumane population control measures, including poisoning and beatings, remain common in some regions, deepening the suffering of animals already struggling to survive.

Our Partnership
Wild at Heart Foundation supports its first project in India through a partnership with Aastha Animal Hospital (AAH) in Faridabad, where over 40,000 stray dogs roam. Founded in 2007 by Ravi Dubey, AAH has earned national recognition for its rescue, rehabilitation, and animal rights advocacy. When Nikki met Ravi in 2019, his passion for creating lasting change through sterilisation and education inspired a strong collaboration built on shared values.

The Difference Made So Far
Starting in 2022 by supporting the nutritional and medical needs of dogs in the care of AAH, our partnership developed into delivering a rolling sterilisation and rabies vaccination programme, treating around 100 dogs per month. To date, this initiative has resulted in more than 3,000 sterilisations and vaccinations, improving community safety and animal welfare across Faridabad.

Building the Future with Your Support
In India, our goals are driven by a deep commitment to improving the lives of dogs who rely on our project partner’s care and compassion every single day. Together, we aim to increase the number of monthly sterilisations and rabies vaccinations, vital steps towards reducing the suffering of street dogs and preventing the spread of disease in local communities.
Ensuring that every dog in our project partner’s care, and countless others living on the streets, can receive nutritious meals twice a day is also a priority. For many, this is the only food and comfort they will know, a simple act that brings safety, relief, and hope to dogs who have so little.
By supporting our global work, you help create lasting change: fewer unwanted litters, healthier dogs, and communities where kindness and compassion replace neglect and fear.
