Autumn Hazards: Keeping Your Dog Safe This Season

Autumn brings crisp walks, crunchy leaves, and cosy evenings, but it also comes with some hidden dangers for dogs. Here’s what to look out for this season:
Autumn brings crisp walks, crunchy leaves, and cosy evenings, but it also comes with some hidden dangers for dogs. Here’s what to look out for this season:

Conkers and Acorns
Both conkers and any part of an oak tree (including acorns, leaves, bark and buds) can be toxic if eaten, leading to stomach upset or worse.

Mushrooms and Toadstools
Some wild fungi are poisonous to dogs and can cause severe illness. Always steer clear and keep curious noses away.

Ticks
Tick season can last well into autumn. These parasites carry diseases such as Lyme disease, so check your dog’s coat after walks.

Fireworks
Seasonal firework displays during events such as Bonfire Night and Diwali can be terrifying for dogs, causing stress and anxiety. Provide a safe, quiet space indoors, draw curtains, and use calming aids if needed. Microchip details should always be up to date, as frightened dogs can bolt.

Darker Nights
As the evenings get darker, it’s important to keep dogs visible with reflective collars, leads, or lights.

With a little extra care, autumn can be as safe as it is beautiful for our furry friends.
