According to the RSPCA, rehoming centres are overwhelmed, with more animals being surrendered than adopted. Between 2021 and 2022, the number of dogs taken into RSPCA care increased by 6%. Furthermore, the number of animals adopted has dropped by 30% compared to 2019, further deepening the crisis.
The PDSA’s latest data reveals that approximately 1% of pet owners, equating to around 140,000 pets, have been forced to give them up due to financial difficulties. In 2024, with the continued economic strain, this trend is expected to worsen.
A significant 34% of pet owners have made personal sacrifices, such as cutting back on food and energy, to care for their pets. This ongoing crisis has resulted in a sharp increase in the number of abandoned dogs.
We continue to seek out and work with UK food banks to alleviate the stress and worry for so many dog owners.
