On Lesvos alone, up to 70 dogs are abandoned each month, facing hunger, disease, and danger without rescue efforts to protect them. Since 2015, Wild at Heart Foundation has partnered with independent rescuer Vassilia Mavraghani, who runs Lesvos X-Strays single-handedly. Vassilia has dedicated herself to rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for free-roaming dogs, providing medical treatment, regular meals, and a safe, nurturing environment.
Her shelter offers a stress-free alternative to overcrowded public facilities, and she works closely with local foster carers to help dogs experience safety and affection. To support Vassilia’s vital work, the Foundation provides monthly funding for food and care.
Recognising the need for improved facilities, we launched a renovation project in 2019, initiated by funds raised through an art show by Lesvos-based artist Matthew Usmar Lauder. With additional sponsorship from Butternut Box, a full two-pen renovation was completed in 2024, creating a safe, warm, and dry space for the dogs to thrive. This transformation ensures a brighter future for Lesvos’ stray dogs, giving them the care and security they deserve.
