Suki was found abandoned in a junkyard in Askar, Bahrain, along with Sampson and Sadie. He had found refuge in an old tyre alongside Sampson, in an attempt to escape the scorching heat of the sun. He was extremely nervous and had zero trust in humans, so rescuing him was a real challenge. But the moment he knew he was safe and was with people who cared about him, his demeanour completely transformed. He started to seek attention from his rescuers by resting his head in their laps, finally being shown love, perhaps for the first time.

As you can see from photos and videos, all three of these Salukis show signs of unimaginable cruelty and neglect. Some of their legs are not properly formed and are shockingly bowed; the result of the unrelenting sport of dog racing, which is popular in Bahrain. Sighthound type breeds are often injected with human steroids in order to make them ‘perform better’ when racing. When this illegal practice goes wrong, leaving the dogs permanently damaged and no longer ‘valuable’, people merely toss them aside to fend for themselves, dumping them with not a care as to what happens to them next.

Local Saluki rescuers and veterinary experts in Bahrain have advised that surgery isn’t needed when the legs aren’t too disjointed. Luckily Suki & Sadie’s legs are not too damaged. Suki should be able to live a happy and comfortable life with a slight change to diet – this usually involves a reduction in protein and an increase in vitamin C taken. It is likely that Suki will suffer some arthritis in the future.

As you will see from the videos, Suki is extremely mobile – he still loves chasing around with his friends and his leg structure doesn’t affect this at all! Much like Sadie, Suki enjoys the freedom to run around on big, open green spaces.

Suki is very gentle-natured, affectionate and he loves to be the centre of attention. Now that he has learned to trust humans, he is extremely sociable and also loves making new friends of the canine variety! Suki will always greet you with tail wags and happy little chirps, even if you’ve only been gone a few minutes. He really enjoys playing and will often instigate playtime by bringing you a toy.

As with all our rescues, we’re committed to ensuring that these Salukis have a happy and healthy life. If you’re interested in adopting and would like more information about Sampson’s dietary and veterinary needs, we would be happy to talk to you. His disability does not cause him discomfort, and he plays and walks as happily as any other dog. We’re hoping that he’ll find a forever home where he can thrive, and finally live life to the fullest!

As this is a particularly special case, we are prepared to consider either an adoptive or foster home that think they could offer a good life and special care for this boy.

Suki was rescued in Bahrain but is now living in foster in Wales – visits can be arranged for serious adopters. Please note that the UK adoption fee will apply.
